Southern California heat wave extends record October streak

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Southern California’s prolonged October heat wave pushed downtown Los Angeles to 101°F on Tuesday. The reading extended an extraordinary run of triple-digit temperatures. It marked a fifth straight day at or above 100°F in downtown Los Angeles. The National Weather Service kept extreme heat warnings in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday for coastal and valley areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Forecasts also kept unusually hot conditions in parts of Santa Barbara County.

Southern California heat wave extends record October streak
Southern California heat keeps Los Angeles far above normal before a weekend cooldown.

Monday delivered some of the most severe heat of the stretch. Downtown Los Angeles reached 104°F, breaking the October 5 record of 101°F set in 1953 and matched in 1971. Woodland Hills reached 106°F, while Long Beach and Anaheim each hit 104°F. Los Angeles International Airport reached 101°F. The widespread records showed how the heat extended from inland valleys to normally milder coastal locations, reducing the usual temperature contrast across the region.

Tuesday brought only limited relief. Downtown Los Angeles remained 21 degrees above its normal October 6 high of 80°F, according to official climate data. Burbank Airport also reached 101°F, about 20 degrees above its normal high. Overnight temperatures stayed elevated across many communities, limiting recovery from repeated hot afternoons. The persistent warmth has increased concern about heat illness during one of the region’s longest and most unusual October hot spells.

    Heat warnings remain through Thursday

A strong ridge of high pressure has driven the prolonged Southern California heat wave. Sinking air has warmed the region while weak offshore and downslope flow reduced the cooling effect of the Pacific Ocean. Unusually warm coastal waters have also limited the strength of the marine layer and sea breeze. Those conditions have allowed heat to persist near beaches as well as inland areas, with temperatures staying well above seasonal averages across much of the region.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours and use air-conditioned spaces when possible. Officials also advised people to check on older adults, children and others who may face greater heat risk. Warm nights can add to the strain because homes and bodies have less time to cool. Cooling centers remain available across Los Angeles County for residents who need relief.

    Weekend cooldown approaches Southern California

Forecasters expect the heat to ease gradually late Thursday and more noticeably into the weekend. Downtown Los Angeles is forecast to remain hot Wednesday, with temperatures near the upper 90s. Burbank could again approach 101°F before temperatures begin dropping. By the weekend, many areas should fall closer to seasonal levels, with highs in the 70s and 80s in several communities. A chance of light showers may also develop by Sunday as the weather pattern shifts.

Coastal hazards are adding another concern during the final days of the heat wave. Elevated surf and strong rip currents are expected along parts of the Southern California coast. A coastal flood advisory covers vulnerable areas of the Ventura County coast through Friday. Low-lying beaches, harbor walkways and parking areas may see minor flooding around high tides. The combination of heat, warm nights and coastal hazards has made early October unusually disruptive across the region, even as cooler weather approaches.
